Baguio City is located in the north of Luzon at 1500 m above sea level. This results in relatively cool temperatures, which is why Baguio is called the summer capital. In fact, Baguio was officially the capital of the Philippines for the summer months between 1910 and 1975. In the winter months, Manila was the capital. Many politicians and celebrities in the Philippines have luxurious residences in Baguio. In 2002 there was still visible damage caused by the eruption of the Pinatubo volcano in 1991.
